What is the origin of the term Motorcycle Squid?

Chris Waldron Chris Waldron

The term "motorcycle squid" is a slang term used by motorcyclists and enthusiasts to describe inexperienced, unskilled or otherwise inferior riders. It is a derivative of the surfing term "squid" which refers to an unskilled surfer who cannot control their surfboard.

What is the origin of the term Motorcycle Squid?

The term was first used in the 1970s by surfers in California, who often called those who could not surf well "squirrelly kids." The term then became widespread among other sports communities, such as skateboarding and BMX, where it was used to describe those who were unskilled at their craft.

This eventually led to its adoption by motorcycling enthusiasts as a way of describing poor riding skills or asinine behavior on two wheels.
